Since its inception, the SAR scholarship has been awarded annually to two seniors in Belleville Township High School District 201; one from Belleville East and one from Belleville West. Currently, we are working with the District 201 Superintendent to establish an additional scholarship award to be granted to a senior from the new Belleville Vocational School. We are very excited to be on the forefront of supporting Belleville students pursing careers in the trades industry.
Working in conjunction with Belleville high school advisors, the award recipients are selected based on the following criteria:
Students must qualify for college admission
Students must be pursuing a degree in the field of math or science (Scott's true loves); soon to include an accredited vocational program
Students must demonstrate a financial need
Students must have an exceptional academic record and be in good citizenship standing
Pictured above: Scott's parents, Dale and Beth Richards with the first Scott Richards Memorial Scholarship recipient, Nichole Geiger. Nichole graduated Belleville West in 2012. She attended Missouri University of Science and Technology, and graduated in 2015 with her degree in Architectural Engineering. Nichole is now employed as a Project Manager at S.M. Wilson & Co. Construction Managers. While her first contact with our organization was as a scholarship recipient, Nichole has continued her affiliation with our group becoming one of our valued board members.
Scott was an avid reader and constant learner. He had a passion for knowledge and understanding; always wanting to know "how things worked". Following high school, Scott attended Rolla University. Early in his studies, he encountered fellow classmates who had received scholarship awards despite their parents/families being in favorable financial standing. Scott couldn't understand how these students were eligible for scholarship funds while so many of his high school classmates were unable to attend college due to financial hardships. For this reason, his Memorial Scholarship was established with the specific purpose of helping students and families who not only meet academic benchmarks, but also demonstrate a significant financial need. In his memory, we strive to help deserving students pursue their academic dreams; specifically those who have little financial support.
Unlike many memorial scholarships available to BTHS District 201 students, the Scott Richards Memorial Scholarship is NOT an "interest only" award. Rather, Scott's scholarship awards a fixed amount to each recipient. The SAR scholarship award is currently a one-time gift of $2000.00 per recipient. As our organization continues to grow, so will our continued support of Belleville students!
The scholarship is primarily funded through an annual golf tournament. The tournament is a 4-person scramble, and it attracts both serious golfers and those who are less experienced but nonetheless enjoy spending time on the course. The tournament also includes a silent auction with packages for everyone - in previous years we've had packages including things from days out for the family to even passes to play at St. Andrews Links in Scotland. If you are interested in playing in the tournament, just joining us for lunch and the silent auction, or if you would like to help in any way (volunteer, donations, sponsorship, etc), please visit the Golf Tournament section of this website or contact us at sarmemorial@gmail.com.
